What Is Raw & Well?

Raw & Well is a raw dog food calculator and meal planner built on the National Research Council's 2006 nutrient requirements for dogs (NRC 2006). It sets your dog's daily energy from metabolic body weight (RER = 70 × BW^0.75, Kleiber's Law), checks each meal plan against 42 nutrients plus the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, shows where the plan falls short or runs too high, and suggests food-first fixes — or a supplement dose when food cannot close the gap.

Targets are set per 1,000 kcal of metabolisable energy and per kg of metabolic body weight, the units NRC 2006 uses, not as percentages of body weight or bowl ratios.

Why We Built It

Raw feeding done well is nutritionally sound. Raw feeding done by guesswork — ratios, percentages and community rules of thumb — often is not. In one study of 95 bone and raw food rations fed to adult dogs, 60% had at least one imbalance, such as low iodine, zinc, copper, vitamin A or calcium (Dillitzer, Becker & Kienzle, Br J Nutr 2011).

The app exists to make those numbers visible: so raw feeders can check a meal plan against NRC 2006 themselves, and know when a veterinarian should lead.

Dr. Missaoui is a licensed veterinarian with 21+ years of clinical experience in canine health and nutrition. She graduated from the National School of Veterinary Medicine of Sidi Thabet (ENMV, 2005, Diplôme N° 2005-028) and works with dog owners who want a diet they can measure and adjust.

She contributed clinical input early and reviews Raw & Well's educational content, so owners understand what the tool checks, what it cannot know, and when a veterinarian should lead. Her author profile and published articles are available at her author page.

Ali Hannachi — Founder & Product Engineer

Ali founded Raw & Well after more than a year of trying to fix his own dog's chronic gastrointestinal issues: different diets, different plans, careful notes, and still guessing. The experience exposed a structural problem: the tools available to raw feeders were built around volume rules (80/10/10, percentages of body weight) rather than the energy-based nutrient targets NRC 2006 defines. He is responsible for the product's architecture.

The Science Behind the App

Raw & Well's calculation engine is built on three foundations:

NRC 2006 nutrient tables — Recommended Allowances, and Safe Upper Limits where NRC sets one, from Table 15-3 (growth) and Table 15-5 (adult maintenance)
Allometric metabolic scaling — RER = 70 × BW^0.75 (Kleiber's Law), with life-stage energy multipliers for puppy, adult and senior dogs, and breed-specific energy adjustments for nearly 200 breeds
USDA FoodData Central — the main source of ingredient nutrient values; values that are estimated rather than measured are labelled as estimates

No absorption coefficients are applied. For minerals, NRC's Recommended Allowances already allow for absorption. For vitamins that come from whole food, NRC warns that its figures may not cover low bioavailability and that no single correction is reliable, so the app says so rather than inventing a factor.

A symptom journal lets you log symptoms next to meal changes. Any patterns it shows are statistical associations to discuss with your vet, not a diagnosis.
