What Is Raw & Well?

Raw & Well is the only raw dog food calculator and meal planner built on the National Research Council's 2006 canine nutritional standards (NRC 2006). It checks 35+ micronutrients using allometric metabolic scaling (RER = 70 × BW^0.75, Kleiber's Law), finds every nutrient gap in your dog's current diet, and gives exact food-first fixes — or supplement doses at the precise amount when food cannot close the gap.

Every calculation is energy-density based (per 1,000 kcal ME), not percentage-based, which is what the NRC 2006 standard requires.

Why We Built It

Raw feeding done well is nutritionally sound. Raw feeding done on guesswork — ratios, percentages, and community rules of thumb — consistently produces measurable gaps in manganese, iodine, zinc, and vitamin E in the published veterinary literature.

The app exists to close that gap: to give every raw feeder access to the same clinical-grade nutrient verification that a veterinary nutritionist would apply, without needing a consultation for every meal plan adjustment.

Dr. Missaoui is a licensed veterinarian with 21+ years of clinical experience in canine health and nutrition. She graduated from the National School of Veterinary Medicine of Sidi Thabet (ENMV, 2005, Diplôme N° 2005-028) and has spent her career working at the intersection of clinical practice and nutritional science.

Ali founded Raw & Well after spending over a year navigating veterinary visits, community forums, and contradictory advice when switching his own dog to a raw diet. The experience exposed a structural problem: the tools available to raw feeders were built around volume rules (80/10/10, percentages of body weight) rather than the energy-density nutrient targets the NRC 2006 standard actually defines.

The Science Behind the App

Raw & Well's calculation engine is built on three foundations:

NRC 2006 Table 15-1 — Recommended Allowances (RA) and Safe Upper Limits (SUL) for all tracked nutrients, expressed per 1,000 kcal metabolisable energy
Allometric metabolic scaling — RER = 70 × BW^0.75 (Kleiber's Law), with life-stage MER multipliers for puppy, adult, senior, pregnant, and lactating stages
Bioavailability corrections — species-specific absorption rates applied to raw whole-food sources: zinc 35%, calcium 65%, iron 25%, manganese 12%

The app additionally applies 191 breed-specific coefficient adjustments and tracks symptom-to-nutrient correlations to flag potential deficiencies before they present clinically.
